As the long nights of summer come to an end and everyone has finally come back from vacation, it’s time to sharpen up those show pitches for none other than CBC. Way way back, before the smoke and heat when everything was still green, Field and Post was excited to host the CBC Info and Pitchfest and the results were amazing. With over 200 people in attendance, the panel of 7 executives representing the full spectrum of CBC production gave a great detailed info session on the types of shows they were looking for and how to pitch them. They went on to listen to over 70 teams pitches, wrapping up the day with a reception where business cards flowed out with abandon. The overall vibe was fantastic. There was a sense on both sides that this needed to happen and more often; getting our west coast talent to connect directly with CBC execs so that we can start making some great shows together. But if you missed out on the event, have no fear. CBC made it very clear that they are open for business and want to hear your ideas. So scratching through my hieroglyphic notes of the two hour plus presentation, here’s the edited point form highlights:
Jessica Schmiedchen – Executive In Charge of Development, Unscripted
Looking for hour long series, factual entertainment, not doc series. 8 episodes that are continual, no one-offs. Shows that won’t date and that can be exported to other countries. No Canadian versions of US shows. Target audience is realistically 40-50 range. Examples that are working for well for them, The Detectives, Still Standing, Back in Time for Dinner. Get a pitch doc together 1-2 pages, no sizzles required. Focus on what is the show and what are we going to see.
Mike Miner – Executive In Charge of Production, Unscripted, Digital
Looking for pitches on short/mid length programs for CBC app and feeds. Series that are 4-12 episodes (4-15 minutes range). Inside an Athlete’s Head was a great example. Real moments with real people within Canada that can be done on a modest budget. Anything that’s new, has a niche, is relatable, discussable and shareable on social media platforms. 1-2 page pitch is all you need to start.
Zach Feldberg – Executive in Charge of Production, Digital Originals
Looking for content for the CBC app and feeds, commissioning 10-12 titles/year, 6-10 episode series,10-15 minutes in length. Target audience is 25-40, and primarily comedy has been working best for them. It Blows definitely hits those points and shows that if you have some edgier content, this is the place to pitch it. Save Me and How To Buy a Baby were other great examples of what they want.
Michelle Daly – Senior Director, Comedy
Karen Tsang – Executive in Charge of Production, Comedy
They are looking for one good solid comedy from BC! Something smart, accessible and character driven. 1/2 hour that is really funny, less dramedy more escapism, relatable and authentic. Working Moms and Kim’s Convenience are the obvious hits that are working but they are looking to broaden out from family comedy. Cavendish an 8 episode half hour series just started production in PEI this summer checked all these boxes and should serve as a template for future pitches. Get in touch and start a relationship. They are keen to collaborate and hear your ideas.
Marie McCann – Senior Director, CBC Kids
Primarily looking for high quality acquisitions (Beat Bugs for example) as they have the most hours to fill in the schedule (28/week). Target audience is general 8 and under but they are expanding their digital platforms aiming for kids 9 and up. Looking for Digital originals for kids and parents to watch together. Dot was a good example to check out, and if kids programming is what you are writing, the digital space will be growing quickly so pitch it now.
Helen Asimakis – Senior Director, Drama
A challenging category as CBC drama core TV audience is aging and they aren’t spending much on attracting a younger digital audience yet. But if you have a light mystery/crime show series, Murdoch Mysteries & Frankie Drake, a book adaptation that would appeal to a broad audience (Alias Grace, Anne) or a family story relevant to all Canadians (Heartland, Northern Rescue), 6-8 one hour episodes, then pitch it! You’ll need a written 5-10 pages, outlining the story, world and tone of your show. Find yourself a good producer to team up with as they look for the strength of writing and the experience of your team.
